Review: Arrow Video Releases the Classic Vampire Flick 'Vamp'

VAMPReviewed by Kevin Scott,

Vamp (1986)
Written by: Richard Wenk, Donald P. Borchers
Directed by: Richard Wenk
Cast: Chris Makepeace (Keith), Robert Rusler (A.J.), Dedee Pfeiffer (Allison), Sandy Baron (Vic), Gedde Watanabe (Duncan), Billy Drago (Snow), Grace Jones (Katrina).

Sometimes some pretty influential stuff by some pretty talented filmmakers has to season into its own. After being around long enough to see something make its debut, fall into obscurity for a couple of decades, be lovingly put on life support by loyal fans, and then rise like a phoenix to the accolades it deserved all along, I’ve got some perspective. That perspective is more than affirmed with “Vamp”. This 1986 horror comedy was well ahead of its time, and was influential in more ways than one.
Vamp had the pedigree of being a New World Picture. That may or may not seem obscure, but Cannon and New World ruled the vast realm of 80’s VHS. Their films filled a gap that we didn’t know we had. The rosters included action, horror, comedy, and the occasional art house film that was seldom ever taken seriously no matter how good it was because of uptight studio snobbery for the most part. Time is the great equalizer and now that Vamp is coming back to attend its 30 year reunion. The former wallflower is now the prom queen. Thanks in part to a stunning Arrow Films makeover.

It really has never looked better, and watching it now after understanding the era it was made in, and what came after, Vamp is a pretty important film in horror. It was part of a trifecta of vampire comedies from 1985 and 1986 that included it, “Fright Night”, and “Once Bitten”. There had been some experimental stuff with horror comedies in the 60’s and the 70’s, but these three sealed the deal. It also created the horror trope of the strip club of death. Now our horror sensibilities tell us that when they there is sex in the champagne room, there’s either vampires, werewolves, or eastern European girls on the other side of the door that will separate you from your appendages and/or bodily fluids.

'Meathook Massacre II' coming to Vimeo, VHS and DVD

by More Horror In Hollywood,

Dustin Ferguson has directed 28 feature films and over 60 music videos to date. He's known for Directing "Silent Night, Bloody Night 2" with Jennifer Runyon Corman and "Camp Blood 4" and "5". He's also collaborated with such artists as Lords of Acid, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult and The Egyptian Lover. In 2015 he shot Meathook Massacre on S-VHS in Lincoln, NE.

The film followed 3 young women who encounter car trouble on the way to a concert and are forced to go find help. However, they stumble upon a masked Maniac wielding a Meathook and all goes quickly sour. It became an instant cult classic after it was released on both VHS and VOD. Merchandise quickly followed: a comic book, a Nintendo game adaptation and even T-shirts.

In 2016 Ferguson returns with Meathook Massacre II. Taking place 10 years after the events in the original film, we follow Dan as he tries to uncover what really happened to his twin Sister Dani a decade ago. A rash of new killings leads him to an underground cavern where he not only meets the Meathook Killer face-to-face, but also his entire sadistic family as well!

MoreHorror visits 'Queen Mary's Dark Harbor' 2016

Dark Harbor 2016By Jonathan Weichsel

On Thursday September 26th I got to take everybody's favorite scream queens, Jessica Cameron and Heather Dorff, to the grand opening of Queen Mary's Dark Harbor, for a night of adventure, thrills and scares. Queen Mary's Dark Harbor has become a perennial haunted attraction in the greater Los Angeles area for good reason; it features fun mazes and a really great atmosphere in one of the best locations in LA.

We went through all of the mazes, and all three of us agree that the best maze is Circus. Not only does Circus have the best scare actors, but it is also the most physically challenging maze, with a ball pit, mirror room, and other obstacles. We also enjoyed, Sideshow which features a room filled with fog and hanging white curtains, so that your visibility is limited to about six inches. We also enjoyed Panic, a 4D theatrical maze which simulates the experience of being chased through Queen Mary by monsters.

Dark Harbor features three mazes that are on the Queen Mary itself, Lullaby, B340, and Soulmate. Lullaby, which transforms the Queen Mary into a demented playground, tells the story of Scary Mary, a child who died aboard the Queen Mary and now haunts the ship. B340 features Samuel the Savage, a killer who has a strange fixation with stateroom B340, and Soulmate turns the Queen Mary into a dark masquerade ball as Graceful Gale searches for her soul mate.

'Tales of Poe' coming to DVD and Digital HD

Tales of Poeby

Co-directed by Bart Mastronardi and Alan Rowe Kelly and co-written by Michael Varrati, Tales of Poe combines the classic horror prose with the star power of legendary scream queens Adrienne King (Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th Part 2), Caroline Williams (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Halloween 2), Amy Steel (Friday the 13th Part 2, April Fool's Day) Debbie Rochon (Model Hunger, Hell Town) and Lesleh Donaldson (Happy Birthday to Me, Funeral Home).

'Grim Weaver' to screen in North Hollywood in October

Grim Weaverby MoreHorror In Hollywood,

Ernest Serrano’s Grim Weaver will be featured at the historic NOHO7 Laemmle Theater in North Hollywood from October 28 through October 31, 2016. The Laemmle Theater is located at 5240 Lankershim Blvd, North Hollywood, CA 91601. The Laemmle Theater phone number is (310) 478-3836. There will be 28 showings of the film at the NOHO7 Laemmle.

“Grim Weaver” stars Sid Burston (Exit Strategy, Get Thee Behind Thee), Art Roberts (Interstellar Wars, Slink), Roxanne Dover (The Shield, Miles Away), Malika Perkins Blessing (The Perfect Man), Belinda Fruge (Unspeakable Indiscretions), among many other talented actors. The film features Dawna Lee Heising of More Horror in Hollywood as Debbie Cory.

As a child in Newark, New Jersey, “Grim Weaver” director Ernest Serrano had two seemingly conflictual dreams - to enter into law enforcement and to write, direct, produce, and distribute independently produced films. Serrano enlisted in the Navy upon graduation from Barrington High School and honorably and outstandingly completed his tour of duty. After marrying Michelle Griffin within 30 days of their initial meeting, Serrano entered into the world of entertainment. Beginning as a production assistant, he worked as a gaffer, best boy, prop maker, and finally as a special effects makeup artist.

Filled with enjoyment by the magic of filmmaking, his head and heart still continued to long to serve and protect. As a result, he entered into law enforcement in 2002 and joined the Fresno Sheriff’s office in 2005. In 2013, he established Burnt Chili Productions in order to serve local businesses by creating 30-second commercials that could be posted online as marketing tools. Simultaneously, he completed a number of short films.

While visiting Sid and Betty Burston in Las Vegas, Serrano shared some of his film work. Within weeks, Ernest and Michele and Betty Burston completed a 125 page script for the horror genre film, Grim Weaver, which began filming in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, June 25, 2016 and filmed in five cities throughout California.
