The Violent Kind Movie Review

The Violent Kind Movie Reviewby Colleen Wanglund,

Written and directed by Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores AKA The Butcher Brothers, THE VIOLENT KIND is a film that I have mixed feelings about.

The movie opens with three members of a Northern California biker gang, Cody (Cory Knauf), Q (Bret Roberts) and Elroy (Nick Tagas) beating the crap out of someone over a bad drug deal or something. Okay so it’s established that they are a pretty violent crew. Three are headed to an isolated mountain cabin to celebrate Cody’s mom’s birthday with the rest of the gang. The party isn’t going so well for Cody—he’s been informed that he has to take on a crap job (he was born into the gang, his dad being an original member) and then his ex-girlfriend Michelle (Tiffany Shepis) shows up with another guy.

Cody’s mood lifts a bit when he sees Michelle’s sister, Megan (Christina Pousalis) who is all grown up and apparently has a major crush on Cody. As the party winds down Megan realizes that Michelle drove off with the new guy, stranding her at the house. Q’s girlfriend Shade (Taylor Cole), who is also Cody’s cousin, tells Megan they’ll just spend the night and take her home in the morning. This is when things start to get weird.

Michelle shows up back at the mountain cabin incoherent and covered in blood. She is brought into the house unconscious; unfortunately the truck that Cody, Q and Elroy drove up in will not start. They’re all stuck with a seemingly seriously injured Michelle and no way to get help. Of course all of the phones aren’t working, either. Cody and Megan got to their nearest neighbor in the hopes of getting some help, but what they find there is quite gruesome, to say the least. In the meantime, Elroy is attacked by Michelle who takes a nice chunk out of his throat, jugular and all. There’s a weird light show and some odd sounds and everyone not injured or possessed pass out.

They awake to find a group of 1950’s Rockabilly delinquents—James Dean wannabes—led by Vernon Joe Egender, who demand to know where Michelle is. It seems as though something is going down very soon and whatever has possessed Michelle is the key. It also doesn’t take long to realize the Rockabilly Rejects probably aren’t from around here. There’s a strange light show involving Michelle and the delinquents and in the ensuing chaos Cody and Megan escape the cabin. Vernon finds them and tells them he’s letting them go….even gives them the keys to his car telling them he won’t be needing it anymore. Cody and Megan drive into the nearest town but things are not what they seem.

As I’ve said, I have mixed feelings about THE VIOLENT KIND. I really enjoyed that it started out as a possible slasher flick but then transitioned to some kind of odd mix of demon possession/alien invasion story. It was something unexpected and unpredictable—and I don’t like predictable. And I have to say I loved Joe Egender’s portrayal of Vernon. The character is enigmatic, dynamic and adds a whole new level to the film. The final 30 or 40 minutes are very David Lynch-like and surreal and will have you asking yourself “what the hell?” But Vernon sucked me in, along with the clever twist involving the Rockabilly gang.

That being said, there are some plot holes too large to ignore that can be a little confusing, although it mostly came together with the rather bleak conclusion. Some of the dialogue is cheesy and there is an early scene at the neighbor’s house that left me scratching my head somewhat.

Overall THE VIOLENT KIND is a fun movie to watch if you don’t take it too seriously and I really did like it.

I do recommend it and it’s currently available for streaming on Netflix and on DVD/Blu-ray.
